Cadore, the best in the alps.
| Cadore, as geographic area, includes all of the Piave
river basin, from its source on the Peralba Mountain to the village of
Termine di Cadore. Cadore is generally divided in sub-territories: Comelico, Sappada, Centro Cadore with Oltrepiave and the Boite Valley. The village of Cortina d'Ampezzo, that geografically is in Cadore, was politically detached from Cadore by the conquer of Massimiliano d'Asburgo in 1511 and was until 1919 a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire.For this reason it acquired an own identity although its language is very similar to the other Cadore's dialects. Sappada has its particular historical and linguistic identity with a sort of german dialect. Cadore is considered one of the best mountain place in the alps due to the particularity of its mountains, the famous Dolomites.The unique place all over the word where you can find this rock of dolomia is here. When you will arrive here, you will be amazed by the beauty of our mountains like the Mt. Antelao or the Marmarole Mountains or the Mt.Tudaio.Then if you'll go to Cortina you 'll see the famous Mt. Pelmo or the Tofane Mountains. If your passion is to walk in the mountain this is the place for you, one of the best in the Alps. Here you can do a quiet walk around the gorgeuse lake of Misurina or if you are an expert alpinist you can climb on the top of the Mt. Antelao. And if your passion is sky-resorts, Misurina, Auronzo, Sappada and Cortina offers you the best both for the expert and for beginner. Besides this , here you can visit some historical places like the military forts of the first and second world war.They are located on the top of the mountains and generally with a beautifull view to the valley. One of the best is the one on the Mt. Rite where the famous alpinist Reinhold Messner settled the "Museo nelle Nuvole" , the Clouds Museum. You can visit the museum, drink or eat something and enjoy one of the best view in the Alps. And finally when you come back to the valley you can see the Cibiana Village.Its particularity is the "Murales": here amost all the houses are painted by local and international artists. If you stay a couple of days in Cadore a must see is Pieve. It's the political and historical centre of the zone and it's an "Italian City of Art". Here was born the famous italian painter Tiziano Vecellio: you can see his house and one of its masterpieces in the church. The Magnifica Comunità that is the Cadore oldest political organ,has on its old palace an interisting museum with many finds of the celtic and roman period. Another famous place is Lorenzago, a little village that was for many years the summer residence of the Pope Giovanni Paolo II and Pope Benedetto XVI. |
